Crowns and bridges are dental restorations that help restore a healthy smile. At Affordable Dental East in Indianapolis, Indiana, Ben Mohrman, DDS, provides crowns and bridges to fill in gaps left by missing teeth and to protect weakened or damaged teeth. Call the office today or use the online tool if you need a bridge or crown.

What are crowns and bridges?

Dental crowns are tooth-colored and tooth-shaped caps that fit over an existing tooth that’s damaged or weakened.

Crowns are also used to anchor bridges. A dental bridge holds a prosthetic tooth or several teeth to fill in gaps where you’ve lost teeth. Bridges attach to crowns placed on your natural teeth adjacent to the gap.

All crowns and bridges are customized to match your existing tooth coloration and blend into your smile. The crowns and bridges provided at Affordable Dental East are made from porcelain — a sturdy material that also matches the translucency of your natural teeth.

Who needs dental crowns and bridges?

Dr. Mohrman recommends crowns to:

  • Protect a chipped or cracked tooth from fracture
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Replace a filling or strengthen a tooth with a large filling
  • Restore the look of a permanently discolored tooth
  • Protect a tooth that’s had a root canal

If you’re missing one or more teeth in a row, a bridge can fill in the space. Bridges stop your natural teeth from shifting into the gaps left by missing teeth. A bridge also makes your smile complete, so you look confident and are able to speak and chew normally.

How do I care for a dental crown or bridge?

After Dr. Mohrman places your crown and/or bridge, he recommends that you refrain from eating until all anesthetic wears off. Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods, such as taffy or popcorn, for at least 24-48 hours, so the restorations have time to settle.

You care for crowns and bridges just like you do your natural teeth. Make sure to brush twice per day and floss regularly. Also, schedule routine exams and cleanings at Affordable Dental East every six months.

In the first week or two following your crown or bridge placement, you may have some sensitivity as your mouth adapts. If you continue to feel discomfort due to your new restorations, like sharp edges or pain while chewing, return to Affordable Dental East to have the fit refined.
